About Us

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish is one of 217 Roman Catholic Parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn. It was formed from Our Lady of Angels Parish in 1971 as a response to the opening of the Bay Ridge Towers. Its founding co-pastors were Father Edward Wetterer and Father Edward Kiernan. Bishop Francis Mugavero gave our parish two Victorian houses at the corner of Ridge Boulevard and Senator Street to use for daily worship, offices, priests’ residence and as a parish house.

For our first 10 years, weekend Masses were held at Salem Lutheran Church on 67th Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues. In 1981, St. Andrew’s decided to build a permanent church out of their corner house.

Succeeding Fathers Wetterer and Kiernan as pastor were Monsignor Howard Basler (1988 — 1990), Father Danny Murphy (1991 — 2000), and Msgr. Guy Massie (2000 — 6/2012), Fr. Joseph Cunningham (9/2012 — 2014) Father Greg Stankus (6/2014 — 7/2022).

Throughout our 50-year history, Saint Andrew’s has been a vibrant, welcoming and active parish known for the quality of its liturgies, its high percentage of lay participation involved in over 30 different ministries and organizations, and its “small country church in the big city” atmosphere.
